Gandhi Ghat and Mangal Pandey Park
The Ganga side of our own town: Gandhi Ghat with the memorial, the museum, and the park where the 1857 story begins. A morning here needs no car at all, but for a group we drop and pick up.
Puja and long-weekend cars go early. Book your date now.

We live here, so this list is measured from Barrackpore, not from Esplanade. Some of these are twenty minutes away and cost you a morning; the furthest, Mayapur, is 104 km and comes back the same night. Every one of them is a shorter drive from this belt than from central Kolkata.

Forty minutes on B.T. Road if you leave by 7am, and the whole thing is done by 11. The easiest half day from anywhere on this belt.
A two thousand year old city under earth mounds, closer to us than to Kolkata. Khana Mihirer Dhipi, a small museum, and no crowd at all. Half a day with the Berachampa market for lunch.
The Portuguese church from 1599 and the Hooghly Imambara with its clock tower and the river view from the top. Both in one morning, and the drive from here is shorter than from Kolkata.
The French quarter, the Strand at sunset, the church, and jolbhora from the old shops. Nicest as an evening trip, and in November the Jagaddhatri lighting is worth the traffic.
The 108 Shiva temple circle and the Rajbari temple complex, most of it terracotta. Only 66 km from Barrackpore against 96 km from Kolkata, so this is genuinely our trip more than a city one.
The furthest day trip that still works from here: leave at 6.30am, reach by 9.30, temple and Nabadwip, and home by nightfall. From Kolkata the same trip is 122 km and much harder in a day.
Anything north or east of the city is closer from here than from Kolkata: Mayapur is 18 km closer, Kalna 30 km closer, Bandel 12 km closer, Chandraketugarh 8 km closer. You also skip the worst of the city traffic in the morning. The one thing that is further is the Digha and Mandarmani side, about 13 km more.

Small things that decide whether the day is good or tiring.
On B.T. Road, anything after 8.30am costs you an extra hour. Every trip on this list should start before 7.30.
The Bandel, Chandannagar and Kalna side is best done through the Kalyani Expressway rather than the river road, unless you want to stop on the way.
For a group from two or three towns on this belt, we do multiple pickups in order rather than making everyone come to one point.
Road distances and drive times here are checked on road routing data and then widened for real traffic. Timings, ferry hours and entry rules change with the season, so ask us the day before you go and we will tell you what the road is like that week.

A day trip works best when the car reaches you early, from your own side of town.
questions
Dakshineswar with Belur for half a day, Chandraketugarh or Bandel with Chandannagar for a full day, and Mayapur or Kalna if you want a longer one. Taki, at 68 km, is the best river day out from here.
