All the beaches near Kolkata are on the same Bay of Bengal, but they are not the same trip. Bakkhali and Mousuni are on the Sundarban side and feel wild and unfinished. Mandarmani, Tajpur and Digha are on the Medinipur side with hotels on the sand. Here they are in order of road distance, with what each one is actually good for.

Tents on sand, no concrete, sea on one side and river on the other. Best for young groups and couples. Not for anyone who needs a lift, a geyser or a doctor nearby.
A mangrove island beside Bakkhali with a watchtower, fish farms and an almost empty beach. Do it as a morning add-on to Bakkhali, 14 km apart.
The nearest proper sea beach, wide and flat enough to walk for a kilometre. Frazerganj harbour nearby for the fishing boats. Simple hotels, no nightlife, good with children.
Hotels right on the sand, red crabs at low tide, and the most bookable beach on this list. The road is good all the way, which is why it is the standard Kolkata weekend.
Twenty kilometres from Digha and much quieter, with casuarina trees behind the sand. The same sea as Mandarmani with a third of the people. Fewer big hotels, so book early.
Old Digha and New Digha, the marine aquarium, the science centre, the new Jagannath temple and hundreds of hotels. Crowded, cheap to stay in, and the easiest first beach trip for a big family.
The beach where the sea walks back five kilometres at low tide and you can stand on the sea floor. Ninety-eight kilometres beyond Digha, so most people add it to a Digha or Puri trip rather than going only for it.
First trip with a baby or with grandparents: Digha, because everything is close and there is a doctor. Two quiet days: Tajpur or Bakkhali. Friends who want to sit up late by the water: Mousuni. One long day out and back: Bakkhali is the only one that works, and even that is six hours in the car for four on the sand.
Do not drive or ride on the Mandarmani sand near high tide, whatever the hotel arranges. Do not go into the water at Mousuni or Bakkhali beyond your knees when the tide is coming in, and check the tide time at the hotel desk, not on a guess. In June to September the sea here is genuinely dangerous, and that is when most accidents happen.

Small things that decide whether the day is good or tiring.
From Barrackpore, Sodepur or Barasat, add about 13 km to each of these and start half an hour earlier.
Book the room before you book the car for any weekend from October to February. The hotels run out first.
For Mousuni, keep one small bag per person, because the last part is a crossing and a walk.
Road distances and drive times here are checked on road routing data and then widened for real traffic. Timings, ferry hours and entry rules change with the season, so ask us the day before you go and we will tell you what the road is like that week.

questions
Mousuni Island at about 111 km and Bakkhali at about 122 km by road. Bakkhali is the nearest one with proper hotels and a wide walkable beach, and Henry Island is 14 km from it.
About 30 km by road, roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Tajpur sits between them, about 20 km from Digha, so a two day trip can cover all three with one car.
