The places, and what each one is like

Distances are road distances from central Kolkata, checked on road routing data.

Diamond Harbour — one day

The widest stretch of the Hooghly, an old fort ruin, and lunch by the water. Under two hours each way, so it is the easiest outing on this page.

48 km from Kolkata

Sundarban — two days

Short drive, long boat ride. Car up to Godkhali, then a launch through the creeks with Sajnekhali and Sudhanyakhali watchtowers. A one day Sundarban trip is mostly travelling, so keep two.

82 km from KolkataBarrackporeSundarbans

Bakkhali — two days

The nearest quiet sea beach, with Henry Island and the Frazerganj fishing harbour close by. Can be done in a day, but you will spend six hours in the car for four on the sand.

122 km from KolkataBarrackporeBakkhali

Mayapur — one or two days

Doable in a long day from the Barrackpore side, which is only 104 km away. Two days lets you add Nabadwip across the river and the evening arati without rushing.

122 km from KolkataBarrackporeMayapur

Bishnupur — two days

Terracotta temples, Baluchari weaving and the Joypur forest 25 km away. Two days is right, because the temples are spread out and closed in the middle of the day.

136 km from KolkataBarrackporeBishnupur

Shantiniketan — two days

Kala Bhavana, Sonajhuri, the Kopai and Kankalitala. Tarapith is 60 km further, so many families do both in the same two days with one car.

Mandarmani — two days

Hotels right on the sand, three hours on a good road, and Tajpur 20 km away if you want it quieter. Weekend rooms go early from October.

168 km from KolkataBarrackporeMandarmani

Digha — two days

The busiest beach town in Bengal, with everything built for visitors: hotels, food, the marine aquarium, the new Jagannath temple. Best for a family that wants no arrangements to make.

180 km from KolkataBarrackporeDigha

Jhargram — two days

Sal forest, the Rajbari, Chilkigarh and the Dulung. Add Belpahari and Ghatshila and it becomes a comfortable three day loop.

170 km from KolkataBarrackporeJhargram

Purulia and the Ayodhya Hills — three days

The real hills of the western belt: Ayodhya top, Bamni and Turga falls, Murguma, Baranti and Garpanchkot. Too far for two days. Go for the palash in February or in the winter cold.

How many days a place really needs

A simple rule that has not failed us: up to 90 km is a day trip, 90 to 200 km needs one night, and over 300 km needs two nights or the trip becomes a drive. People break this rule for Purulia and Digha every season and come back saying they saw nothing.

Pick by the season, not by the photo

The Sundarban is best from November to February, the western hills in February for the palash and in the winter for the cold, the beaches from October to March, and the temple towns all year. In July and August the sea is rough and beach driving is dangerous, and in Purulia and Jhargram the forest roads are slippery. That is when we suggest Mayapur, Bishnupur or Shantiniketan instead.

What we tell people before they go

Small things that decide whether the day is good or tiring.

Distances here are road distances from central Kolkata. From Barrackpore, Sodepur or Barasat, Mayapur and Chandraketugarh are closer, and everything towards Digha is about 13 km further.

For anything over 200 km, take an MUV or an SUV even for three people. Six hours in a small car is the part of the trip people remember badly.

Temples close in the afternoon, museums close on one weekday, and forest gates shut before sunset. Ask us the timings for your date before you fix the plan.

Road distances and drive times here are checked on road routing data and then widened for real traffic. Timings, ferry hours and entry rules change with the season, so ask us the day before you go and we will tell you what the road is like that week.
