Kolkata to Digha is about 180 km by road and 195 km from Barrackpore. On a clear morning it takes four hours; on a holiday weekend with traffic at Kolaghat it can take five and a half. The road is good the whole way, which is why Digha is the sea trip most families do first.

Nandakumar, 120 km
Where the Digha road leaves the Kharagpur highway. From here it is about 60 km of straight road to the sea.
Digha, and 15 km more to Mandarmani side
Old Digha and New Digha are a couple of kilometres apart. Tajpur and Mandarmani are on the way back, so many trips do two beaches in one booking.
Car, train or bus
Trains from Howrah and Santragachi reach Digha station in about four hours and are cheapest, but you still need something for the hotel, Shankarpur, Chandaneswar and the way back. Buses run through the day but not on your timing. A car makes sense when you are four or more, have luggage or are travelling with children and elderly parents, because it stays with you the whole trip.

Leave by 6am for a one day trip. Leaving at nine means arriving in the afternoon heat.
Puja, Christmas week and 1 January are the three most crowded times. Book the hotel weeks ahead.
